ICAR's focus is the utilization of alternative designs, new technologies, and sustainable systems and materials. ICAR consists of a Graduate Education Center, various commercially viable research/development and testing laboratories, along with other support facilities. Research in automotive technology is conducted for partnership initiatives with BMW, IBM, and Microsoft. Clemson has one of the top university labs focused on CFD improvements to aircraft jet engines, power-generating turbines and race cars. The computational fluid dynamics lab can predict and eventually control intricate fluid flows. Other reseach includes developing complex aerodynamic modeling that may help eliminate time-consuming prototype testing, and drive-by-wire technology for use in mainstream automobiles.
